LABYRINTH-TESLIM Barbara & Art Culver Center for the Arts Original Compositions and Traditional Music from Greece and Beyond Revered Crete-based composer-performers Ross Daly and Kelly Thoma of Labyrinth join the exploratory string duo Teslim (Kaila Flexer and Gari Hegedus) in a mesmerizing evening of instrumental music inspired by the modes and odes of Greece, the world’s most ancient and fertile cultural crossroads. The quartet displays astonishing skill at presenting instrumental songs wrung through impossibly complicated rhythms rooted in the musical traditions of the Mediterranean and Near East. A pantheon of ethnic string instruments including the oud, saz, laouto, baglama, bulgari, divan, cura, violin, viola, and lyra will guide listeners on a journey deep into the stirring repertoire of Greek, Turkish and Sephardic music. “Gorgeous string dues with violin and an array of Middle Eastern lutes…profound, quietly joyous music.” - Jeff Pinzino, Casual Listening “Flexer and Hegedus are creators of new music based on a profound love of traditional Greek, Turkish, Arabic, Jewish, and Balkan musics. Kaila’s fiddle playing is, as ever, supremely subtle and satisfying, and she has a strong kindred spirit in Hegedus.” – Hollis Tayolor, Fiddler Magazine.

Neighboring Sounds Barbara & Art Culver Center for the Arts "Quiet! Can you hear that? The debut feature from critic-turned filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho opens with a striking montage of a neighborhood in the Brazilian city of Recife. The images are ominous, alternating between slinky Steadicam tracks and eerily unwavering long shots. But it’s the sounds that predominate: The cacophonous squeals of children on a playground, the nails-on-a-chalkboard grind of an electric sander, the metal-bending crunch of two cars crashing together. Filho’s anxiety-inducing formal control is in full force throughout this multicharacter narrative. And there are even a few horror-movie jump scares that hint at the confrontationally sociopolitical turn the film takes in its impressively calibrated last half-hour." Keith Uhlich, Time Out New York. FIPRESCI Prize, Rotterdam International Film Festival, 2012 Brazil | 131 minutes | Unrated

The Mavericks Reunion Tour Special Guest: Shelby Lynne Fox Performing Arts Center The Mavericks are back. The country-steeped garage band with a Cuban-American lead singer emerged from Miami with their sultry debut that was equal parts innocence, intensity and vintage influences. But time has a way of melting when you're busy living life – and two decades has passed since their polyrhythmic brand of post-modern country has given the world "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down," "Here Comes The Rain" and "Dance The Night Away." Their hit, "Here Comes The Rain", won a GRAMMY for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. "The fans have always understood us," says Raul Malo, the lead singer with the rich, supple voice that's second to only Roy Orbison in its ability to convey lonesome, desire and vivre. "We made them feel good – and that was something then, as now I think, people wanted. Life is so serious; even for a moment, let's forget and enjoy!" Shelby Lynne is brash, uninhibited and absolute in her artistic conviction. She was awarded the Best New Artist GRAMMY for her album I am Shelby Lynne and made her acting debut in 2005 playing Johnny Cash's mother in the motion picture "Walk the Line." Her latest album, Revelation Road, will be released on October 18. Never one to go with the crowd, Shelby continues to stand apart from the mainstream music world. She recently founded her own label, EVERSO RECORDS. Lynne's Tears, Lies, And Alibis, EVERSO's first release, debuted at No. 16 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart in April of 2010.

Mexico at the Hour of Combat California Museum of Photography Mexico at the Hour of Combat: Sabino Osuna’s Photographs of the Mexican Revolution is an exhibition and book based on the Osuna Collection of 427 glass negatives of the Mexican Revolution, which are held in the Special Collections section of University of California, Riverside. The collection mainly covers the period 1910 to 1914. The principal photographer was Sabino Osuna, about whom little is known. Internal evidence suggests that he was a commercial photographer in Mexico City, whose work shifted from portraiture and architectural studies to photo history when the Revolution began. He had excellent access to the protagonists on all sides and captured many moods of this dramatic revolutionary period. The collection is not just an odd gathering. It displays internal unity, with several concentrations of subject matter. Additionally, in contrast to the famous Casasola Archive of nearly 500,000 images that cover the Mexican Revolution through the 1940s, the Osuna archive presents one person’s viewpoint, rather than that of a hundreds of photographs as with the Casasola Archive. A 118-page book that includes several essays accompanies this exhibition which is available at the UCR ARTSblock bookstore or from Laguna Wilderness Press. The exhibition opens in the month of November in order to coincide with Riverside’s annual Día de los Muertos celebration on November 2, 2012, and the anniversary date of the Mexican Revolution, November 20th, 1910, when Francisco “Pancho” Villa and Pascual Orozco led the first insurrectionist attack.

When: November 3 – January 5, 2013 | Reception: November 3, 2012 | 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Where: California Museum of Photography, 3824 Main St., Riverside, CA 92501 For more information please visit cmp.ucr.edu

Orange Aid Riverside Art Museum In 2006, the Art Alliance of the Riverside Art Museum created a giant orange project which scattered artist-inspired fiberglass fruit around Riverside streets. This time they have shrunk the oranges and will be creating a grove of over 100 small fiberglass oranges created by local artists. Artists have been asked to use the small oranges as a unique canvas for their talents for this fundraiser. Each orange is just a bit bigger than a basketball and weighs about 9 pounds. When finished, all 120 oranges will be displayed in an orange 'grove' show at the Riverside Art Museum. On November 9, 2012 there will be a benefit event from 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at which the oranges will be given to sponsors through a lottery. All proceeds from the sponsorships of small oranges will benefit the Riverside Art Museum and its many exceptional educational programs and exhibits. A limited selection of art oranges will be up for silent auction.

When: November 1 - 9, 2012 | Benefit: November 9, 2012 | 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Where: Riverside Art Museum, 3425 Mission Inn Ave., Riverside, CA 92501 For more information please visit www.riversideartmuseum.org
