The inspirational story of Nigerian artist Fela Anikulapo is a musical testament to his life and legacy. Opening up by paying homage to the drum and its importance, Adesola Osakalumi embodies the spirit of Fela and narrates while walking you through pivotal moments in his life. The music is electrifying and the underlying themes pay tribute to greats like James Brown, John Coltrane and more. Memorable songs such as "Trouble," "Zombie, "and "Wedding” stand out as crowd pleasers. The deep suffering of the Nigerian people under European colonization is displayed but glossed over with some comedic relief. Overall the show was fantastic, featuring memorable African dance routines that had the audience on their feet, with the help of a personal lesson from Adesola. Michelle Williams appears as Sandra, the strong American teacher to Fela, who is reminiscent of the late great Nina Simone. Melanie Marshall steals the show as Funmilayo, the martyred mother of Fela. Fela's struggle with the death of his mother sends him to the Orishas, and introduces the audience to the ways of the Yoruba. The interconnectedness of African and African-American culture is depicted throughout the musical. A must see production, executive producers Jay-Z and the Pinkett-Smiths have brought a hero’s life and music to the stage.
