Femi Kuti & the Positive Force

Cedar Cultural Center

At age 51, Femi Kuti continues to juggle the immense legacy of his legendary father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who died in 1997. His own artistic vision and his father's legacy mesh nicely on Femi's new album, No Place for My Dream. Fela, of course, created Afrobeat, the ferocious blend of funk, jazz, and African elements that was a powerful musical and political force. Fela's brash criticism of political corruption and expediency put him constantly at odds with Nigerian authorities, and Femi, his eldest son, continues to speak out for the oppressed. Femi's lyrics on Dream denounce injustice and economic oppression while encouraging people to action, fueled by the impressively taut, incendiary, horn-stoked, polyrhythmic fury of his 10-piece band, Positive Force. --Rick Mason
