Lovers of Afrobeat should be excited by “No Place for My Dream,” an album of new songs written and performed by Femi Kuti, son of visionary musician Fela Kuti.

Backed by the nine-person Positive Force band, Femi demonstrates that the musical apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Like his charismatic father, sometimes known as the Bob Marley of Nigeria, Femi’s songs brim with leftist revolutionary liberation lyrics and social consciousness.

And then there’s the groove. The son learned well from his father, creating a slew of songs recorded in Paris with unrelenting funk and African rhythms. Songs are long opuses with blaring horns, percolating percussion and background vocal chants.

In songcraft and vocal style, Femi demonstrates a slightly more melodic style than his now sainted father. For genuine

Afrobeat from the anointed heir, Femi keeps it in the family.
