Founded by host band Donna the Buffalo, the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance will mark its 23rd year this week, beginning Thursday and running through Sunday at the Trumansburg Fairgrounds.

With several dozen bands on four stages covering an eclectic array of genres, GrassRoots has long billed itself as a “music lover’s paradise.” This year’s lineup continues that tradition, with headliners Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, Rusted Root and the Duhks joined by local stalwarts such as Mary Lorson, John Brown’s Body, the Sim Redmond Band, the Horse Flies and Johnny Dowd.

Add in festival regulars such as Keith Frank, Walter Mouton, the Flying Clouds and the Campbell Brothers, stir in a few international acts such as Aurelio Martinez (Honduras) and Fatoumata Diawara (Ivory Coast via Paris) and top up with the GrassRoots Chamber Orchestra, and you’ve got all the ingredients for the delightful musical gumbo for which the festival has become known.

One highlight this year is Festival au Desert Caravan for Peace, which will feature renowned Malian musicians Mamadou Kelly, Tartit and Imharhan. With recent unrest in Mali, the country’s annual Festival in the Desert has been cancelled this year; instead, several of the musicians are touring around the world in this mini-festival, which will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday on the Infield Stage.

Other highlights include a few acts that have performed at the Virginia Key GrassRoots Festival, which marked its second year in Miami earlier this year. Those include DJ Bill Kelly, DJ Richard McVey, Equanimous Minds, Cordodito and the Spam Allstars.
