TRAIN TO BASRA AND OTHER STORIES "Hearing Iraqis sing their songs," says Dena El Saffar, "it’s like the blues—there is a lot of heartbreak." Dena was born in Chicago where her father passed down stories of his homeland. Dena became enthralled with Iraqi music. After earning a degree in classical music at Indiana University, she founded Salaam, a Middle Eastern ensemble. This album celebrates her band’s 20th anniversary. The track Iraqi-American Blues is energetic and lively. Joza Tears features Dean with joza, the Iraqi spiked fiddle. 02/18/14 >> go there
