Exclaim, Album Review >>

Well, it's a breakneck, crazy slab of gipsy music, that's for sure. Speed metal tempo meets Zappa-like precision, as the father/son trumpet duo tear through references ranging from reggae to Latin to Turkish, with the long vaunted gipsy (or rather, Roma) lust for life. This isn't surprising since, in most places, to be called Roma is to be labelled a second-class citizen or worse. This release is a party album — a high-energy dance album that cooks incredibly well and appropriates various styles and puts them through a Roma attack, coming off like a really good time. Where it shines as something else is with a beautiful track called "Truba I Covek," which is a wonderful showcase for the trumpet mastery of the younger Marko. As a matter of fact, the last few songs ("Afrikan Paprika," "Bobanova Saga") let the sheer musicality of this band show through — a break from entertaining, perhaps? Musically, there are no surprises, but this is endowed with plenty of spirit.
