Blitz the Ambassador: ‘Afropolitan Dreams’ by Carl Abernathy on May 18, 2014 Listening to Blitz the Ambassador’s new album, “Afropolitan Dreams,” reminds me of the first time I ever heard Gil Scott-Heron. Hip-hop artist Blitz the Ambassador, who’s originally from Ghana, fights for immigrants, the poor, the disenfranchised with his songs. His raps are sometimes frenetic, sometimes gentle, but like Gil Scott-Heron’s, his messages are always fierce. And the music — which draws from Afrobeat rhythms, classic R&B grooves and a little jazz — is riveting. The album’s highlight, at least for me, is “Make You No Forget,” an Afrobeat hip-hop anthem on which Blitz the Ambassador collaborates with Seun Kuti. Blitz the Ambassador matches the pulsing onslaught of the beat with a rapid-fire rap that skewers corrupt police and politicians. On “The Arrival,” Angelique Kidjo’s gorgeous vocals provide a gentle echo to Blitz the Ambassador’s hard-hitting rap. It’s a powerful song. “Dollar and a Dream” is another highlight. The horns and the restrained funkiness of the instrumentals would have fit seamlessly on an album by Gil Scott-Heron, who, I’m betting, would have approved of both the message and the music.
