Talk about cross-cultural combinations: The Jogja Hiphop Foundations features modern young performers with attitude from Indonesia (more specifically, the city of Yogyakarta in Java, which is revered as a center for traditional Javanese culture), rapping across language and other borders.

This sharp-dressed collective promotes tolerance and pluralism but also takes on corruption and inequality with witty musical hooks that incorporate global and indigenous trance rhythms, Indonesian pop and gamelan music, traditional Javanese poetry and literature.

They will perform for three nights in the Mondavi Center’s Vanderhoef Studio Theatre — in the cabaret configuration, with small round tables, each with four chairs — on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 29-30 and Dec. 1, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 general, $15 for students, available at www.mondaviarts.org or 530-754-2787.

A question-and-answer session will follow each performance, chaired by either Henry Spiller, chairman of the UC Davis department of music; Katherine In-Young Lee, assistant professor of ethnomusicology at UCD; or Sarah Geller, a Ph.D. candidate in ethnomusicology.
