The Music of Tartit: the beauty of a tradition to be discovered

Franck Tenaille, the artistic advisor for the series “Music from here and other places” has promised “ a spellbinding music colored by strange blues from the desert. Like a starry sky in the middle of a landscape of dunes.” A promise kept, like magic. It is there, palpable. A particular kind of ambiance, somewhere between intimidation, maybe in awe of the unknown, and decontraction, with a rustic installation in open air. The rows of chairs were quickly found to be insufficient. Luckily, the carpet of grass was ready to welcome late arrivals. Finally, on the stage facing the public, seated, underneath the stars. How to savor the songs, this music, this concert coming from the tradition of these nomadic people, living in the Malian Sahara. A dive into a universe where the dunes and the sand are never far away….The costumes, superbly composed of large pieces of blue fabric,  and traditional hairstyles, seating in a semi-circle, all suggest the desert: their piercing song enters in all of our ears.

The songs succeed, brief punctuated interruptions that are short but incisive , from the Touareg women. They sing for democracy, love, beauty. They sing of their people, for the men and the women. But the message is always accompanied by a festive mood: the entire park of spectators finished their evening by taking the rhythm and clapping their hands, swaying in place. E.M. 07/25/02
