EUROPE: Semaine des Spectacles, Songs of Touareg Women >>

At the same time in love with liberty and loyal to their origins, the Touareg women of Ensemble Tartit sing of peace, love, exile. A splendid blues from the desert. The Touaregs belong to the large community of Berbers in North Africa. Music and sung poetry occupy a privileged place and continue today to be an important benchmark, proof of their cultural identity. Tartit means union, a term which fits like a glove to these “blue women” of Tartit reunited around their griot to sing their tradition but also to to sing the reality of their people, these nomads who were forced to become refugees. Seated robed, and in a semi-circle, using a 3 stringed lute, a tinde (kind of drum) and the violin, they perpetuate an ancestral art which accompanies celebrations: marrriage, baptisms, but also divorces as is their custom. Their repertoire also features songs of exile, the blues of a landscape which is thirsty for its roots. These women give of their voices to revive ours and their roots.
