The Tennessean, Vocal arts ensemble takes a spiritual journey to the past >>

Ancient music of the Holy Land is on the bill in early October at Lipscomb University.

The San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble, or SAVAE, will perform Oct. 9 in a program titled Ancient Echoes, which includes what's described as original prayers of Jesus sung in his native Aramaic, liturgical music from old Jerusalem, and the court music of Herod's palace.

Having made its debut in 1989, the group has made a mark with a string of recordings of early music from Latin America. Ancient Echoes, their fourth recording, came out last year and has received upbeat reviews for its exploration of old music and dialects from the Middle East. The ensemble uses a range of modern reproductions of obscure instruments known to have existed in the area at the time, as well as more-familiar instruments still in use today.

Lipscomb pianist Jerome Reed, who's proved himself something of a connoisseur of alternative classical music in his own performances of Charles Ives and others, says he believes this concert may prove to be a real highlight of Lipscomb's performing arts season.
