Teaching Music, CD Review >>
By combining original religious texts from Middle Eastern sources and ancient melody fragments, Ancient Echoes: Music from the Time of Jesus and Jerusalem's Second Temple (2002; CD, 72 minutes, $17.00) offers an interpretation of what music sounded like over 2,000 years ago. The CD was recorded by the San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble. The vocalists sing in the languages of the original sacred texts -- Aramaic, Greek, and Hebrew. The musicians use modern recreations of instruments known to have existed during this time. Complete translations are provided in the CD booklet.
