Civilizations come and go, leaving historians and anthropologists to sort through relics to make sense of a people, a culture, and era.  But how does music from 200 years ago leave its mark without fossilized CDs or MTV for historical reference?  Covita and Christopher Marones of the San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble (SAVAE) have researched the music Jesus might have heard and will perform songs from their 2002 release of "Ancient Echoes" on Sunday.
The Maroney spent a year and a half studying Aramaic, an ancient Middle Eastern language spoken in Jesus' time, to perfect the songs and prayer for the ensemble's latest project.  They also studied ancient Hebrew and Arabic dialects.  Some of the sources for "Ancient Echoes" include the Torah, The Dead Sea Scrolls, New Testament and a Greek gravestone dating from the first century.
SAVAE debuted in 1989 in San Antonio with the sounds of early Latin America in "Guadeloupe: Virgen de Los Indios."  Other releases by the seven-piece vocal and instrumental ensemble include "Native Angels," which explores the music from 400 years ago of Native American and African converts and "El Milagro de Guadalupe," a follow-up to the sounds of Latin America from the 16th century. 04/16/04
