Mexico City Noir includes new stories by Paco Ignacio Taibo II, Eugenio Aguirre, Eduardo Antonia Parra, Bernardo Fernández Bef, Óscar de la Borbolla, Rolo Díez, Victor Luiz González, F.G. Haghenbeck, Juan Hernández Luna, Myriam Laurini, Eduardo Monteverde, and Julia Rodríguez. Followed by a reception.

The Authentic Mexican Flavors Foundation presents the third annual New York Authentic Mexican Restaurant Week. Featuring prix-fixe or specially designed menus, plus pairings by Tequila Cazadores, this dining week represents true Mexican cuisine—its flavors, aromas, and textures—and opens the doors to 24 of the city's finest Mexican restaurants.

Lara, an ill young girl who sees life pass from her balcony, finds Sole, a woman who doesn't want to live, on a neighboring balcony. The two establish a relationship based on silences and gazes.

More than 50 years after the dam at Valle de Bravo was built to provide water for Mexico City, a possible solution to this long-time problem is revealed.

Salvador leaves home in search of better opportunities in the United States, but is paralyzed by fear when he reaches the border. When he returns to his village, he is unable to face his family and hides in the wilderness.
El suicidio del tiempo (Pável González)

A documentary about the 2004 disappearance of Pável González, a political activist who studied at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), and School of Social Anthropology (ENAH) in Mexico City.
Monica Martinez: WURMHAUS
Inspired by the visual, social, and architectural language of Mexico City’s urban economic systems, artist Monica Martinez constructs sculptures and installations from commercially recycled materials. At Eyelevel BQE Gallery, Martinez proposes an alternative to contemporary agriculture and its ecological impact by creating a micro architectural habitat for the edible mealworm.
Mezcal & Worms Dinner Party
Chef and visual artist Philip Ross, creator of Critter, San Francisco’s natural sciences salon, prepares a three-course menu based on worms grown by artist Monica Martinez, paired with Mezcal San Honesto and accompanied by salsas by La Fundidora. As part of the dinner, Martinez will discuss her Worms project, on view at Eyelevel BQE Gallery, and the producers of Mezcal San Honesto will explain their artisanal process.
Moona Luna
Inspired by the birth of her first child, Latin alternative band Pistolera's lead singer and songwriter Sandra Velasquez brings family-friendly songs in Spanish and English that continue the Pistolera's tradition of positive messages and toe-tapping beats. Moona Luna is the first female-led bilingual band of its kind, but most of all, it's fun, fun, fun!

Natalia Lafourcade
Young Mexican pop singer Natalia Lafourcade has a clear, buoyant voice and weaves multi-layered melodies that tap bossa nova, alternative rock, and folk. Her latest solo album, Hu Hu Hu (2009) garnered her a Grammy nomination for “Best Latin Pop Album.”
The New Songs of the Ceiba
The New Songs of the Ceiba is a trilingual anthology of literary works by contemporary Mayan writers from the Yucatán Peninsula. The primary literary voices for their people, these writers produce short stories, essays, poetry, and plays in Mayan and in Spanish that explore traditions and contemporary life in their communities. Edited by Dr. Carlos Montemayor and Dr. Donald Frischmann, with English translations by Frischmann (Instituto de Cultura de Yucatán, 2009). Followed by a reception.

Zarela's Mexican Corn Kitchen
Mexican chef and food historian Zarela Martinez explores the relationship between Mexico’s indigenous cultures and corn with this lecture and cooking demonstration. A tasting of four featured dishes, catered by Zarela’s Restaurant, will follow the demonstration.
Juan Pablo Villa + Arturo López: La Gruta de Baba
Mexican singer and composer Juan Pablo Villa showcases his creative vocal skills in this improvisation-based concert, accompanied by Arturo López’s live sequence of ephemeral projections that use ink, sand, water, oil, and 2D puppets.

Mexican alt-rock icon Ely Guerra returns to NYC with her newest album, Hombre Invisible, launched under the auspices of her own label, Homey Company. Backed by her band, singer-songwriter Guerra delivers unpredictable, highly original songs that cement her status as one of her country's most intriguing artists.
Reading Carlos Monsiváis in New York
Carlos Monsiváis was one of Mexico’s most important public intellectuals, serving as an indispensable chronicler of Mexican arts, culture and politics for more than 40 years. When he died on June 19, 2010, he left an enormous legacy as a writer, critic and patron of popular arts. This homage to Monsiváis will feature a round table discussion with Rafael Barajas “El Fisgón” (Cartoonist for La Jornada), Jean Franco (Professor Emeritus, Columbia University), Rubén Gallo (Professor, Princeton University), Carmen Boullosa (New York-based Mexican Writer). This event will be in Spanish and followed by a reception.
Tambuco Percussion Ensemble
A three-time Grammy nominee, Tambuco is renowned for its wide-ranging repertoire and creative interpretations, spanning structuralist percussion music, drumming, and avant-garde sound interpretation. Formed in 1993 by four musicians, Tambuco has recorded and performed with the Kronos Quartet, Michael Nyman, Orquesta Filarmónica de la Ciudad de México, and many others.
This concert is part of SONIDOS: Celebrating Latino Arts, a yearlong multi-disciplinary programming initiative at Symphony Space.
