More About Talavya

Bringing Indian classical percussion to the masses, Tālavya is a dynamic and high-energy tabla ensemble that is contemporary in feel, while  full of the richness and nuances of classical tabla. Composed by Indian music maestro Pandit Divyang Vakil, the four percussionists play complex rhythmic patterns in perfect synchronization with ease and charisma. With its blend of solos, duos and group compositions, the audience experiences each artist’s unique style and mood, while hearing the various types of tabla compositions, such as kaydasrelas and gats.  

Tālavya is comprised of Rushi Vakil, Kaumil Shah, Sahil Patel and Rahul Shrimali with accompaniment on the harmonium.   It currently tours with its latest work by Pandit Divyang Vakil – Tabla Ecstasy.  Previous works include Power of Tabla, Tabla Taandav, Ardha Taal Chakra and more.

Pandit Divyang Vakil – Composer
Pandit Divyang Vakil is a renowned Tabla Guru, in addition to being a spiritual healer and spiritual guru.  His colossal experience of 30 years of teaching has produced innumerable professionals in the world of music.

He travels to over 20 countries around the world, conducting masterclasses, workshops and lectures on music and spirituality.  With his blessings, his students run institutes in places such as Korea, Australia, Europe and the UK and the Taalim School of Indian Music in the US.

With countless compositions to his name, Pandit Divyang Vakil has given shape to a contemporary form of classical tabla playing.  His compositions flow with modern music, appealing to the masses, while retaining all the facets of classical tabla, appealing to the maestros.  Some his tabla ensemble compositions include Tabla Tarkhat, Power of Tabla and Tabla Triveni.  For more information on Pandit Divyang Vakil, visit www.divyangvakil.com.


MUSICIANS

Rushi Vakil
Son of tabla maestro Pandit Divyang Vakil, Rushi has been nurtured to become a multi-faceted musician.  As a tabla player, he has performed all over India and Asia, as well as North America and Europe.  Aside from being apart of Tālavya current work and performing as a soloist, Rushi is apart of Tālavya’s duo composition Power of Tabla and the classical tabla ensemble Ardha Taal Chakravyuha.

In addition to playing tabla, Rushi is a keyboardist and composer.  As a composer, he creates music for dance performances and documentaries and leads his own Indo-world fusion band called Taan.  He regularly works with musicians from different countries and music traditions for various projects.  His world music work has been performed at SFinks Festival and Colorafestival in Belgium.  He is also a leading faculty member, teaching tabla and keyboard, at Rhythm Riders Music Institute and conducts music workshops worldwide.


Kaumil Shah
Drawn to tabla at a young age, Kaumil has immersed himself in the world of music.  Good music is not simply characterized by good technique, but involvement in its creation, which never lacks in Kaumil’s playing.  His solo performances leave an impact on his audiences and he makes his presence felt as member of Tālavya.
 
Kaumil was also apart of Tālavya previous works such as Power of Tabla and Tabla Taandav and the classical tabla ensembles Ardha Taal Chakra and Ardha Taal Chakravyuha.  He has expanded his drumming to encompass the djembe and is a multi-percussionist in Indo-world fusion group Taan.  Aside from performing, he is a tabla instructor at Rhythm Riders Music Institute.


Sahil Patel
Hailed a child prodigy, Sahil has been drumming for as long as he can remember. A born-performer, it is almost impossible not to smile and move with the music while watching him.

A versatile multi-percussionist, his drumming repertoire extends beyond classical tabla.  He has been a member of Tālavya for Tabla Ecstasy and Tabla Taandav along with classical ensembles Ardha Taal Chakra and Ardha Taal Chakravyuha.  When not performing as a soloist or tabla ensemble member, he works with Indo-world fusion group Taan.  Sahil has shared the stage with artists such as Remo Fernandez.  His drumming has taken him to Canada, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore and more. He has worked with musicians from around the world and has also performed at the SFinks Festival and Colorafestival in Belgium. 


Rahul Shrimali
While he is the youngest and newest member of Tālavya current work, Rahul’s maturity in playing places him on equal footing as the other artists.  Considered amongst the best young tabla players in India, with his level of dedication and knowledge, Rahul is poised to be a torchbearer for tabla in coming years.  He is also tabla soloist and has been apart of Tālavya’s Tabla Taandav and classical tabla ensembles Ardha Taal Chakra and Ardha Taal Chakravyuha.
