Drone.it, Album Review >>
Like the Terry Riley piece from 1972 (below), this just-released album isn't drone. However, jazz pianist Bennett also fuses East and West with superb results. Drone pioneer La Monte Young was an admirer of John Coltrane's music, and I get that Coltrane feeling on the first tracks here. (Well, Alice Coltrane too.) I shouldn't stretch the comparison too far, but Young certainly was deeply involved in classical Indian raga. Bennett's fusion is more accessible, certainly. In a rare gesture of generosity he's put the entire 12 tracks here on Bandcamp - perhaps out of allegiance to the free of charge concerts he attended in India.
