Caribbean: Musical Roots

Bezilean musician Andy Palacio blends soulful rhythms and smooth melodies in Wátina, his powerful new album released by Cumbancha this year.  Palacio has long championed his Garifuna roots and has worked tirelessly to bring awareness to this dying culture.  For Wátina, he solicited the help of the Garifuna Collective, Garifuna musicians from Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize, to celebrate the African and Caribbean sounds and stories that shaped the Garifuna culture.  The Garifuna people can be traced back to the seventeenth century, when two European ships transporting West African slaves sank off the coast of the Caribbean island of St. Vincent.  The surviving Africans intermingled with the indigenous Caribbean people, resulting in a dynamic and unique language and culture rooted in rhythm, dance, and storytelling. 11/22/07
