Golden Horn ***
Deepak Ram, a South African-born Indian musician, plays the bansuri, a bamboo flute. Giant Steps sets some of the high points of American jazz ("Naima" and the title track from Coltrane, Miles Davis's "All Blues") and sets them for flute. Several of the juxtapositions work well: a reading of "Summertime" relocates it from the Deep South to Apartheid-era South Africa; others add little to the originals. "Madiba's Dance", Ram's composition, pays homage to the signature dance that Nelson Mandela reserves for public rallies.
