The idea of the dynamic Senegalese superstar recasting songs in reggae settings sounds exciting, but results are merely pleasant, despite contributions from reggae veterans (Wailers keyboardist/producer Tyrone Downie, guitarist Earl “Chinna” Smith) and N’Dour’s warm vocal tones. N’Dour’s “Marley” opens on an affectionate, promising note, and “Joker,” “Diarr Diarr” and an earnest polish of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” engage reggae’s emotional heart.
