Praise in the Terminal Mbalax's finest stops by the Blue Note Jazz Fest By: Stacey Anderson
Eminent Senegalese singer-percussionist Youssou N'Dour stopped by our great Northeast recently to receive an honorary doctoral degree in music from Yale University. With tonight's gig, he also stands the best chance yet of turning Terminal 5 into a place of dignity, for which he should receive another commendation. A widely influential leader of mbalax, a genre that combines the traditional religious singing and griot percussion of Senegal with more modern Afro- and Latin-beat pop, N'Dour is one of the most widely recognized musicians in Africa and a prolific singer, songwriter, and bandleader. Start with 2007's gorgeous Rokku Mi Rokka if you're new to him; Rolling Stone heaped accolades on it for all of 2007, and rightly so. Part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival. 06/22/11 >> go there
