Record Review: “Putumayo Presents Brazilian Beat” According to this new Putumayo compilation, there is no looking back at the classic bossa nova years in Brazilian music right now, even with the presence of Marcos Valle, a younger alum from that era. In fact, with the exception of Valle, most performers are quite new to the scene. For instance, Florida-raised Monica da Silva contributes “Aí Então” (which translates as “So Then”), a bilingual electronic-inspired ballad on the uncertainties of a relationship. Valle appears with an updated cover of Chico Buarque’s “Partido Alto” that takes it from its original samba beat to a more dancefloor-friendly format. “Feriado Pessoal” (‘Personal Holiday’) is a refreshing contemporary samba by newcomer Bruna Caram that first appeared as the title track of her second album of the same name. The tune has a funky groove based on guitar, percussion and a few sonic effects that serve as a backdrop to her sensual voice. Also notable is Brazilian Groove Band’s instrumental cover of Joao Donato’s “Bananeira” (“Banana Tree”), a classic tune previously covered by the likes of Bebel Gilberto and Eliane Elias. On their version, they play in a more jazz-samba format with individual saxophone and trombone solos that give it a groovy feel. “Brazilian Beat” is a good way to get to know Brazil’s new artists and the music they are playing now–even if it’s just to prepare for your next visit to a Brazilian-inspired club in Miami Beach.
