Ladysmith Black Mambazo Raise Your Spirit Higher (Wenyukela) Heads Up International B+
Hope and deep faith imbue the stunningly beautiful singing of Ladysmith Black Mombazo, South Africa's beloved and respected a cappella singing group. They've been recording superb albums for decades, though most of us first heard them on Paul Simon's groundbreaking Graceland album. (Simon also produced the group's Grammy Award-winning Shaka Zulu album). The group's singing has a reserved, but strong quality. Joseph Shabalala's beautiful voice soars over the harmonies. Several tracks also have English lyrics, including "Black Is Beautiful," "Fak' Ibhande (Don't Drink and Drive)" and driving and a tribute to Shabalala's late wife by her grandchildren, who was murdered during the making of the album. - Ellis Widner, Arkansas Democrat Gazette 02/01/04
