Shepherd Express (Milwaukee, WI), CD Review >>
If the band name raises brassy polka oompa-pa, guess again. On People’s Spring, Warsaw Village Band dig deeper into the country’s past and reach further into the future, finding a droning intensity reminiscent of the Velvet Underground in haunting monophonic melodies. The band reaches toward electronic trance on one hand and wild Gypsy rave-ups on the other. The ironic titled People’s Spring, a cheeky take on Poland’s unlamentable Communist regime (which promoted a homogenized version of Polish folk music in service to their ideology), reinvigorates ancient traditions with an intensity and soulfulness seldom found in the world music bin.
