The Puerto Rican band Plena Libre is seven musicians led by founder, composer and bassist Gary Nuñez. They are joined on this recording by several guest soloists. Nuñez has been championing the plena style and helping to bring it from a folk music status to a more evolving style by adding more instrumentation and expanding the repertoire. However, this recording is an homage to the great plena composers.
Plena is a style of music that emerged in Puerto Rico in the late 19th century to become a vital part of the culture along with bomba, another Afro-roots style. Traditional plena is characterized by the complex dance rhythms created by hand drums and accompanied by the güiro and a signer. Nuñez and Plena Libre keep the soul of the music while expanding the sound.
