The Republican, Plena Libre due at Holyoke family festival >>

Plena Libre's new CD is titled "Estamos Gozando!," which means "We are enjoying ourselves!"

Sunday, plenty of other people will have the opportunity to enjoy the band's distinctive sound, as the group caps off four days of celebration at the 18th annual La Familia Hispana (The Hispanic Family) Festival.

The festival kicks off four days of concerts and other events for the whole family today at McNally Field in Holyoke. The theme for this year's festival is "Peace for Our Children" and it will feature Antonio Francisco Calafell as grand marshal. Calafell pedaled around the island of Puerto Rico last year to raise awareness about violence against children.

Plena Libre is a three-time Grammy-nominated group based out of the southern city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Traditional plena is an uniquely Puerto Rican musical style that features three different-sized hand drums called panderos, which are tuned to various pitches.

These drums are used to play interwoven rhythms that provide the pulsing underpinning for a call-and-response singing style conducted by a lead singer and a chorus. Later, accordions and cuatros were sometimes added to the mix.

Plena Libre, however, has expanded and modernized plena, adding bass, keyboard, horns and percussion to the evolving sound of the genre.

The band's core line-up features seven members, including founder Gary Nunez, who has been instrumental in preserving and developing Puerto Rican music.

The band will also be playing at the Puerto Rican Festival in Boston Aug. 8.
