Plena plenty
Plena Libre, a seven-piece Puerto Rican ensemble that mixes traditional Latin music with modern sounds, performs 8 p.m. Saturday at Community Theatre, 100 South St., Morristown. The Afro-Rican rhythms of plena emerged in Puerto Rico in the late 19th century when immigrants from Barbados combined their native songs with local music. Plena became an orally transmitted “newspaper” for migrant agricultural workers. A decade ago, bassist and bandleader Gary Nunez created plena libre, a free form of “liberated” version of the classic music for which the band is named. $22-$37. Call (973) 539-8008. 10/01/04
