Paul Simon's famed Graceland made Ladysmith Black Mambazo household names in 1986. Led by the charismatic Joseph Shabalala, the a cappella troupe performs isicathamiya, the traditional Zulu music of mine workers in South Africa. But this foothold in the past has never quelled their penchant for innovation. Mambazo's latest album, No Boundaries, finds them collaborating with the English Chamber Orchestra, laying gorgeous African vocal harmonies on top of Bach, Schubert, and Mozart, while guitarist/vocalist Vusi Mahlasela works his pan-African jazz idioms into the bountiful mix.
