Sounds of Timeless Jazz, CD Review >>

South Africa’s International Classical Music Festival commissioned Isak Roux to arrange the compositions that comprise Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the strings of the English Chamber Orchestra and the International Festival Orchestra’s collaboration on NO BOUNDARIES. This is a great recording that fuses the African musical heritage with European classical elements via Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s powerful a capella singing. The CD alternates between classic Mambazo pieces and classical masterpieces including Paul Simon’s “Homeless,” the Africanized version of Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” a striking interpretation of “Amazing Grace,” and the closing Zulu lullabye “Thatindawo Moya Khajesu.” The strings play a very subtle but important role in the musical story telling and reach symphonic proportions on a beautiful solo on “Awu Wemadoda.” Each song addresses one  universal theme: mankind’s need to converse with the spiritual world and with NO BOUNDARIES , the various moods and styles offered by LBM are what make this recording a true gem. 05/04/05 >> go there
