 Afrique C'est Chic - La Collection 1

April 5, 2006

By Georgina Haupt

Various Artists
Star rating: *****

This very chic house production belongs in the collection of every lover of the genre. Afrique C'est Chic's triple box set offers some of the best, and most exuberant house, with awesome mixes featuring some of Africa's finest - Miriam Makeba, Salif Keita, Mafikozola, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Femi Kuti.

As the title suggests, the music has strong francophile influences, with world music and a smattering of jazz thrown in for good measure.

All three CDs are brilliant - if they don't get you up and dancing then you ain't got no beat - but this should help get even those with two left feet going.

Disc 1, my favourite, includes Blaze's Jump for Love (Blaze Jump Mix), T-kolai's Exodus (T-kolai Main Mix with Mama Africa) and Bob Sinclar's Veil Ou La

Disc 2 features the killer track Zouk! (also T-kolai), probably one of the happiest tracks you are likely to hear

Another winner is Matin Solveig's Madan (with Salif Keita's hauntingly beautiful vocals).

Disc 3 has Frederic Galliano and the African Divas' Melou Melou; D'Jaimin and the Oulé Oulé Family's Children of Africa and Louis Vega's Africa/Brasil (Isolée Dawn Mix).

And, as a nice touch, the record label, Kickin' Music has a social conscience, supporting the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust. 04/05/06 >> go there
