The smiley-titled Mali (Putumayo) argues that "Mali is the next Cuba," whatever that means, but sometime Beat-scribe Jacob Edgar has done his usual adept job of mixing the somewhat familiar (Issa Bagayogo, Habib Koitc, Tinariwen) with obscure artists to compile a package which should appeal to confirmed world music fans and the novice. Both traditional and electrified examples of Malian music are here. As a bonus some of the funds from this release go to the venerable charity Oxfam's Malian development work, so buy with both confidence and conscience.
