Clarinetist Ioan Ivancea has a theory that Romanian Gypsies who fled to the United States in the 19th Century helped invent jazz. His group, Fanfare Ciocarlia, shows that he may be on to something. This 12-piece band is set up to make a huge sound, as can be expected when two tuba players and two percussionists propel the reeds and horns. But what's surprising is that this weighty group swings rather than attacks. Fanfare Ciocarlia even performs a smoldering rendition of Duke Ellington's "Caravan." 07/01/05 >> go there
