Whether you're a fan of flamenco, West African hip-hop or the lushsounds of the Indonesian gamelan, the next few weeks provide manyopportunities to sample world music -- the catchall categorization forthe ethnic musical styles of other countries. While many of theperformers are on North American tours far from their homes in Siberiaor the Cape Verde Islands, others live in the U.S. but preserve andshare the cultural traditions of their ancestors.
LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO Feb. 3 Brunswick, Maine This grammy-winning South African group began performing in the 1960sbut received wide attention in the U.S. only after appearing on PaulSimon's "Graceland" album. Since then they've recorded with everyonefrom George Clinton to Dolly Parton. This tour supports their new CD,"Long Walk to Freedom." The American tour kicks off at Bowdoin Collegewith a concert at the Pickard Theatre; some 50 cities later, the tourends in Austin, Texas, on April 12.
