LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO

Long Walk to Freedom

World

Grade: A

It's been 20 years since the world discovered the a cappella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo singing on Paul Simon's groundbreaking album Graceland. In addition to accompanying Simon's vocals, the group's founder, Joseph Shabalala wrote the hit Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes and co-wrote Homeless with Simon. The group's distinct, infectious sound helped them find international success with awards, accolades and widespread critical acclaim that they continue to receive today.

In the 20 years since Graceland, the face of South Africa has changed dramatically, most notably with the end of apartheid. Long Walk to Freedom is a collection of some of Ladysmith's most famous songs commemorating the anniversary of the album that put them in the world's spotlight and the changes they've seen along the way. It is an incredible album that skillfully communicates the emotion, history, culture, faith and unwavering spirit of the South African people. The traditional, mostly unaccompanied music the group is known for, called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-me-ya), evolved in the mines of South Africa, where black workers would sing to entertain themselves.

The final result on Ladysmith's latest release is a hopeful, uplifting and exquisite triumph — a glimpse back at where their people have been and where they're going. Joining the group to help them celebrate this milestone are well-known artists including Melissa Etheridge (Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes), Sarah McLachlan (Homeless), Natalie Merchant (Rain Rain Beautiful Rain) and Emmylou Harris (Amazing Grace/Nearer My God to Thee). The special guests add another dimension to the music, but at its heart, this record is about this very important group, the country they always believed in, the rich traditions they work to preserve and the history they never want to forget. It's a breathtaking, emotional story of a journey that ended in freedom.
