Born in the mining camps of South Africa, the traditional music sung by Ladysmith Black Mambazo is called isicathamiya (Is-Cot-A-Me-Ya). Black workers were taken by rail to work far from their homes and families where they would entertain themselves after a six-day week by singing songs into the wee hours every Sunday morning.
Widely regarded as South Africa's cultural emissaries to the world, the ten-member a cappella ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo has brought this unique sound to international prominence. Breaking cultural barriers, Ladysmith Black Mambazo use distinctive, hauntingly beautiful songs to convey an inspirational message of love for all peoples.
Mambazo will be performing in support of their star-studded Heads Up International release, Long Walk To Freedom (due at retail January 24). The album is a collection of twelve new recordings of classic Mambazo songs and features vocal performances by such pop icons as Sarah McLachlan, Melissa Etheridge, Natalie Merchant, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Zap Mama, and others. At once their most ambitious and accessible work, Long Walk To Freedom was conceived in recognition (and celebration) of the twentieth anniversary of the group's ascendancy to the world stage (via their contribution to Paul Simon's seminal Graceland), and the dawning of democracy in South Africa twelve years ago. 02/24/06 >> go there
