Ladysmith Black Mambazo
"Long Walk to Freedom"

Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s excellent new CD entitled ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ takes an introspective journey along the multi-faceted path to freedom. This latest release invites the talents of Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Melissa Etheridge, Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, Joe McBride and Zap Mama to round out a beautifully orchestrated array of songs that Ladysmith Black Mambazo has amassed during their 20-year career as world-class luminaries, while also calling for the end of Apartheid in South Africa. ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ features twelve new renditions of early Mambazo tunes. Collectively, songs such as “Nomathemba” and “Diamonds On The Soles of Her Shoes” as well as other stellar musical stories takes a historical look back at three decades of recording history. One such track in particular entitled “Shosholoza” may well be the highlight of Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s ‘Long Journey to Freedom.’ Prominently displayed are a septet-featuring trumpeter Hugh Masekela and a host of other African standouts that includes Lucky Dube and Bhekumuzi Luthuli. When Paul Simon first introduced Ladysmith Black Mambazo to the world on his album ‘Graceland,’ few realized even then how this very dynamic and thoroughly enlightening group would impact music as a whole. ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ is an energetic pertinent addition to any CD collection.  03/01/06 >> go there
