Zimbabwe: Nyathi Snatches Leading SA Drummer

ZIMBABWE'S internationally acclaimed dub-poet, Albert Nyathi, has snatched Maqhinga Radebe, a leading South African guitarist, ahead of his national tour later this month.

Radebe, at one time labelled "South Africa's Prince of Masikandi Music" is a member of the trailblazing group, Shabalala Rhythm popular for their chart-topping albums Ubuhle bakho, Umaqondana and Vuma.

The charismatic performer told Standardplus in a recent interview that Radebe and Leonard Zhakata would be part of his national tour, and would also feature as guest artistes at a massive gig showcasing more than 40 musicians at White City Stadium on 3 September.

Nyathi said they had struck an arrangement under which Radebe would be joining Imbongi each time his colleagues at the Rhythm -- the Shabalala siblings Sibongiseni and Thamsanqa -- are on international tour with their father, Joseph and his group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Nyathi said: "The other two members of Shabalala Rhythm are also members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. So each time they are away with their group, Maqhinga works with us. It is a good arrangement that allows us to inter-twine the best of Zimbabwean and South African rhythms and dances."

According to Nyathi, Radebe's involvement during the tour would also be used to inspire upcoming Zimbabwean guitarists.

"Our guitarists are going to learn a lot of things from this man, who has worked with some of South Africa's most respected individuals. During his time here we hope he will be able to impart his skills to Zimbabwe's upcoming guitarists," added Nyathi.

Radebe's guitar instincts enabled Shabalala Rhythm to be nominated for the Best Zulu Album at the South African Music Awards (SAMA), which was eventually won by Shwi. He has also performed at Nelson Mandela's home. 08/21/06 >> go there
