Tinariwen
NEW YORKAs the Grateful Dead said, what a long, strange trip it's been. The musicians of Tinariwen are members of the nomadic Tuareg people of the Sahara, but now find themselves wandering among members of the jam-band circuit. Having updated Tuareg music with electric guitars and politically charged lyrics, Tinariwen then jumped into the consciousness of trance-seeking Westerners. The spiraling melodies of their gritty guitars, punctuated by their chants and hand-clapped rhythms transport audiences to the harsh but clear nights of the Sahara. On November 27th at 8 p.m., Tinariwen will be at the Highline Ballroom, 431 West 16th Street. For information, call (212) 414-5994 or visit www.ticketweb.com. - Martin Lipp 11/23/07 >> go there
