No doubt a group like Occidental Brothers Dance Band International should keep it festive and full, pouring horns and snappy guitar solos all over its eclectic, African-inspired beats. What’s surprising, though, is how much this lineup of Chicagoans and Malians can do with relatively simple, spare arrangements. At times, it sounds as if guitarist Nathaniel Braddock’s plucky phrasing and wiry tones could carry the groove alone. On the whole, the band’s members don’t just jam; they work off each other to surround drummer Asamoah Rambo’s rhythms with warm instrumental meanderings that feel liberated and purposeful at once. 06/25/09 >> go there
