Jnl Final Edition, CD Review >>
Two of my all-time favorite songs of Mexico are on a new CD from the respected ensemble Mariachi Real de San Diego. Those songs are “Noche de Ronda” and “La Malagueña.” I first appreciated the beauty “Noche de Ronda” when I was living in Costa Rica and later learned the lyrics listening to a vinyl recording by Eydie Gormé with the Trio Los Panchos. I recalled hearing “La Malagueña” played by late-night Mexico City street musicians. That was a few decades ago. I’ve tried to memorize the words of this mariachi standard. On this new CD titled “Mariachi Classics,” the six-member Mariachi Real de San Diego — that’s San Diego, Calif. — infuses new life into these and the other 14 classics. I was particularly impressed by the sustained high note that the guest singer hits on “La Malagueña.” The sostenuto in his vocals seems like a superhuman feat for a singer whose range on the album is from high baritone to low tenor. I had to replay the song several times to convince myself that what I was hearing was the real deal. Some of my other faves on the CD are such romantic gems as “Solamente Una Vez,” “Quiereme Mucho” and “Sabor a Mi.” And let’s not forget the famous singalong birthday song “Las Mañanitas.” These never grow old. 07/03/09 >> go there
