Singing in the Dark

Live from the NYPL goes uptown to Symphony Space for Singing in the Dark:Paul Holdengräber in conversation with author and psychiatrist Kay Jamison (Touched with Fire: Manic Depressive Illnessand The Artistic Temperament) and Grammy-winning vocalist Susan McKeown. The evening will feature McKeown's premiere performance of the songs from her new album, Singing in the Dark, with a ten-piece band. The album explores creativity & madness through the lyrics of great poets, most of whom were writing through the lens of depression, mania and substance abuse. Lyrics by Byron, Sexton, James Clarence Mangan, Theodore Roethke, Gwendolyn Brooks, Hayden Carruth, Welsh poet Gwyneth Lewis and Irish poet Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill.
