RELIX, The Skatalites >>
Though they've been at it for nearly four decades, the Skatalites haven't grown stale. Pick your favorite under-appreciated session-player wizards-Motwon, Stax, Nashville, whoever-and add ska legends the Skatalites to the list. Some of these guys were on hand for the first Studio One records of Bob Marley and the Wailers. This is where reggae got its formative bump. Bands like the Specials and even No Doubt took cues from this horn-intensive pack of ska statesmen, too. The Skatalites new disc, From Paris With Love, has brass and reeds all washed together, tasteful soloing and plenty of rimshot on the backbeat-even a little singing. If, part way in, you think you detect a hint of movie music, you're not mistaken. This is a funky big band. The prominent slide trombone is revenge for all those 'bone players who've ever had to lay low in a band. John Adamian 07/01/03
