Vintage Guitar, CD review >>
Bembeya Jazz is a 12 piece jazz band formed in Guinea on the West Coast of Africa in the early ‘60s. Bembeya (World Village) is the band’s first album in 15 years, but not a hint of rust is evidenced. The ensemble is multi-vocals, multi-horns, percussion, and electric guitars-the latter led by the crystalline melodies of Sekou “Diamond Fingers” Diabete. “Sanfaran” allows Diabete to wander over a hypnotic groove, showing off some jazzy phrasing from the guitarist who has recorded with singer Miriam Makeba and jazz pianist Hank Jones. “Gbapie” features some impressive Hawaiian slide. Sekou never does quite what you expect him to, so if the upbeat rhythms and melodies haven’t already put a smile on your face, his refreshing solos should. 11/01/03
