Tinariwen
Sunday @ Palace of the Fine Arts Theatre: Tinariwen, a Tuareg band based in Mali, pioneered a bluesy, guitar-driven style known as ishumar, a sound steeped in nostalgia for the freedom of the desert. The group came together in a military camp in Libya in the mid-'80s, where the former nomads and guerrilla fighters were exposed to the music of Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and various Moroccan rock bands. Driven by lean, sinewy guitar lines, the band's latest album, "Imidiwan: Companions," features the charismatic founders Ibrahim Ag Alhabib and Hassan Ag Touhami and younger members who have picked up Tinariwen's mantle as the voice of the Sahara's Tuareg people. 7 p.m., $25-$65, all ages. 3301 Lyon St., S.F. (866) 920-5299, www.sfjazz.org. (A.G.)
