blog post First Play: From Another World: A Tribute to Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan's music gets covered. A lot. Richie Havens, Emmylou Harris, Patti LaBelle, Pearl Jam, Neil Young — they've all given Dylan his due. The thing is, Bob Dylan is global.
On From Another World: A Tribute to Bob Dylan, released Feb. 11 on Buda Musique, Dylan's music is covered by a wide range of world music artists.
"I wanted people who were like Dylan," explains producer Alain Weber. "People with the same spirit, poets in their own culture."
From Another World has been 10 years in the making and includes contributions from artists like Eliades Ochoa from Buena Vista Social Club, Bengal's Paban Das Baul and Macedonia's Kocani Orkestar making a Balkan reverie out of "Rainy Day Woman."
"Some artists could reproduce the melody," Weber explains. "Some found it just too far from what they know, so they ended up doing it in their own way. And that's what I wanted, to have the spirit of the songs."
That's exactly what Weber got.
From Another World: A Tribute to Bob Dylan is available for streaming on CBC Music until Feb. 11 (the stream will be available outside of Canada as of Feb. 6).
