Minneapolis Star Tribune, "The Big Gigs" - Concert preview >>
Touring behind its new release "Critical Mass", the Dave Holland Quintet is one of the hippest working groups in modern acoustic jazz, with a heavyweight at every instrument. Chris Potter (saxes) and Robin Eubanks (trombones) are stars in their own right. Steve Nelson remains the nation's most underrated vibraphonist. And semi-new drummer Nate Smith makes a fine, fiery foil for British bass legend Holland, who tips his composer's cap to the city of New Orleans with the warm, gently strutting "Easy Did It", a CD highlight. (7 & 9 p.m. Mon. - Tues., Dakota Jazz Club. $28-$35).
