Daara J Boomerang (Wrasse)
This is hip-hop from the motherland. Senegalese outfit Daara J storm Boomerang in a number of languages (though French dominates) and a series of political rants that verbalize West African frustrations. While the language barrier makes it difficult to grade their flow and ideas, the fierce deliveries pretty much get the point across that this isn't garbage about ice and hootchies. Guest spots by the likes of Rokia Traore and Sergent Garcia add flavor during pockets of monotony, and when Daara focuses on the Afro-Latino pop of the celebratory "Esperanza" their cross-cultural potluck needs no translation.
