Now Toronto, CD Review >>
Despite the somewhat dubious claim in the sleeve notes that the boastful Sékou Diabaté is as talented as he is modest, the celebrated Bembeya Jazz guitarist isn't called Diamond Fingers for nothing. And backed by musicians who understand their support role on Guitar Fö, the solo-happy Diabaté gets to stretch out and showcase his dazzling picking skills on a seamless series of hypnotic Guinean grooves for close to an hour. Although there are a few breaks for some abysmal talk-singing interludes, Diabaté mercifully indulges in only three vocal features, which allows him to demonstrate more of his superior six-string technique.
Sékou Diabaté and his Bembeya Jazz crew get busy at the Distillery's Global Café Fest tonight (Thursday, July 8) . 07/08/04 >> go there
