Boston Herald, CD Review >>
What makes Fowlis special isn’t just her focus on the Gaelic “mouth music” tradition, or her roots in Scotland’s wild and woolly Outer Hebrides. It’s her ability to choose modern Gaelic tunes that rest so easily beside the ancients that it’s hard to tell what’s old and what’s new. The effort is bolstered by Fowlis’ lush yet athletic alto and all-star backup featuring the likes of Chris Thile; Fowlis’ husband, Eamon Doorley (of Ireland’s Danu); ex-Solas guitarist John Doyle; and ex-Battlefield Band fiddler John McCusker. Download: “Turas San Lochmor.” (Appearing Wednesday at Club Passim, Cambridge.)
