Azam Ali – From Night to the Edge of Day
April 12, 2011
Jessie Davis
Azam Ali continues to mesmerize listeners with her rich vocals and lush, rhythmic melodies on her third solo release. The aptly-titled From Night to the Edge of Day is actually an album of lullabies recorded for Ali’s son Iman, who was born in 2008. It’s a reassuring dirge, a gesture of comfort to those born far from their homeland, but also to anyone feeling lost or disenfranchised.
Both traditional and original songs feature on this album, with Ali’s voice supported by musicians from the Middle Eastern regions whose languages and lullabies she sings. She is also joined by the Bozzini String Quartet from her current hometown of Montreal.
Play this record and prepare to be moved by its wistful sadness and gentle reassurance that only a mother – a mother who has straddled many cultural and social divides – could convey.
